Book Cover
San Francisco, CA (October 16, 2018)—Retro gaming is hot. Witness the sold out Nintendo Classic and Super Nintendo Classic that sold over 7 million. Old school gaming is in.

Hot on the heels of this trend, No Starch Press is excited to announce the release of The Game Console ($24.95, 264 pp., November 2018)—a book sure to spark the interest of retro gaming fans everywhere with its museum-like, photographic history of iconic consoles and the hardware inside.

Evan Amos, the world's foremost video game console photographer, has been collecting, dissecting, and photographing consoles since 2010. Page after page of highly-detailed photographs and cutaways bring the reader into this rare collection of hardware representing over 40 years of gaming. Each entry contains snippets of info about the console and detailed displays of dissected parts and exploded, close-up views.

The book moves through console generations, from 1970s models like the Magnavox Odyssey and Atari 2600, to the original Game Boy, to newer consoles like Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch. Readers will also find information about the gaming industry, a breakdown of console specs, and statistics about games released with certain consoles.

Part art book, part historical timeline tracing the evolution of game systems, The Game Console will appeal to long-time gamers and those new to the retro gaming community.
